Pisces
מזל דגים
In Pisces, Kopel Gurwin offers a vivid interpretation of the zodiac sign מזל דגים through a balanced and highly stylized composition. Two fish, rendered in contrasting tones of pale grey and luminous blue, glide in opposite directions across a dark field, creating a dynamic image of motion, duality, and quiet symmetry. Their mirrored relationship gives the work a sense of rhythmic flow while suggesting the mutable, elusive quality traditionally associated with the sign.
The central motif is framed by a richly ornamental border composed of layered greens, blues, and yellow-gold circular forms. This surrounding field lends the composition both containment and movement: the repeated circular elements echo the fluidity of water, while the vegetal, leaf-like motifs establish a decorative structure that is at once playful and ordered. The dark background intensifies the brilliance of the appliquéd forms, allowing the chromatic contrasts to emerge with particular clarity.
As in many of Gurwin’s works, text forms an integral part of the visual composition. The Hebrew inscription of the sign’s name appears beside the fish in vividly cut letterforms, introducing a bold accent of red and pink that animates the lower portion of the image. Rather than serving merely as a label, the lettering participates in the overall balance of shape, color, and rhythm that defines the work.
Through its distilled iconography, tactile surface, and luminous palette, Pisces transforms an astrological emblem into a compact ornamental vision. The work reflects Gurwin’s distinctive ability to unite symbolic imagery, handcrafted precision, and decorative vitality within a clear and memorable formal language.
