In Good Tidings, Kopel Gurwin transforms a prophetic phrase from Isaiah into an image of movement, radiance, and uplift. At the center of the composition stands a winged angel, poised in a graceful dance while sounding the shofar. The figure appears at once ceremonial and buoyant, embodying the emotional force of proclamation — the arrival of peace, hope, and redemption carried not only through words, but through gesture, rhythm, and sound.

The surrounding border, composed of dense blue and violet vegetal ornament, frames the scene with an atmosphere of solemn beauty. Its flowing branches and clustered leaves create a visual counterpoint to the animated central figure, balancing stillness with motion. Gurwin’s color language is especially striking here: the cool blues and greys of the frame intensify the luminous pinks, magentas, and soft blacks of the angel’s garment and wings, while the touches of white and yellow in the floral motifs lend the work moments of brightness and release.

At the base of the composition, the biblical text is rendered in Gurwin’s distinctive Hebrew letterforms. As in many of his works, the inscription is not merely explanatory but structural: it anchors the figure and binds image and scripture into a unified visual field. The text becomes part of the composition’s rhythm, reinforcing the sense that message and form are inseparable.

The verse from Isaiah 52:7 celebrates the bearer of glad tidings — one who announces peace and salvation. Gurwin interprets this theme not through narrative complexity but through symbolic clarity. The angel and shofar evoke proclamation, awakening, and spiritual renewal, while the ornamental frame deepens the sense of reverence. The result is a work that conveys both festivity and consolation, presenting prophecy as something vividly alive, audible, and enduring.
