In The Revelation on Mount Sinai, Kopel Gurwin interprets one of the defining moments of the biblical narrative: the covenant between God and the people of Israel. At the summit of a towering composition stands Moses, lifting the Tablets of the Covenant above his head. Beneath him, successive tiers of figures gather in a dense, rhythmic arrangement, their upward-reaching forms emphasizing the relationship between the individual prophet and the assembled community.

The central scene unfolds within a dark, elongated arch, surrounded by an intricate field of branching vines, stylized leaves, and small floral motifs. Warm shades of brown, ochre, terracotta, and muted pink dominate the ornamental background, while the figures within the arch are rendered in vibrant blues, purples, reds, and golds. The ascending arrangement of the crowd, culminating in Moses and the tablets, gives the composition a pronounced vertical movement and monumental presence.

A passage from Exodus follows the curve of the central arch in Gurwin’s distinctive Hebrew letterforms. Rendered in luminous shades of yellow and orange, the inscription frames the biblical scene while establishing a visual connection between the divine command and its representation. The carefully cut and layered felt shapes, together with the visible stitching that defines their contours, lend clarity and tactile richness to both the figures and the surrounding ornamentation.

The verse from Exodus 34:27 records God’s instruction to Moses to write the words of the covenant with Israel. Although the passage belongs to the account of the covenant’s renewal, Gurwin’s composition evokes the broader revelation at Mount Sinai, bringing together Moses, the sacred tablets, and the gathered people in a unified image. Through its ascending structure, ornamental abundance, and integration of biblical text, the work gives visual expression to the enduring significance of the covenant.

And the LORD said unto Moses: Write thou these words, for after the tenor of these words I have made a covenant with thee and with Israel.

Exodus 34:27
