The Sun
השמש
In The Sun, Kopel Gurwin transforms a familiar celestial form into a bold exploration of color, shape, and movement. At the heart of the composition, an expansive circular motif unfolds in overlapping shades of crimson, coral, and pink. Its sweeping curves establish a powerful visual center, while angular elements extend outward, suggesting the sun’s radiating energy without resorting to a literal representation.
The composition is animated by a striking interplay between organic and geometric forms. Brilliant yellows and oranges emerge from the lower portion of the central motif, while elongated shapes in violet, blue, and deep purple rise above it. These contrasting elements create a sense of movement and tension, as if the circular form were continually expanding and transforming. The surrounding fields of burgundy, brown, and black provide a visual counterweight to the vivid central arrangement.
Gurwin’s meticulous cutting and layering of felt are integral to the work’s expressive character. Each shape is distinctly defined, its edges articulated by visible stitching that emphasizes the relationship between adjoining forms. The natural beige textile ground remains exposed around the composition, allowing the materials themselves to participate in the visual balance. At the lower edge of the central circle, the artist’s Hebrew signature becomes a subtle element within the arrangement.
Rather than depicting the sun as a recognizable object, Gurwin explores its visual associations through warmth, radiance, and rhythmic abstraction. The result is a composition in which concentrated color and carefully orchestrated forms evoke the dynamic presence of light, while preserving the tactile qualities of the artist’s distinctive felt appliqué technique.
