Cancer
מזל סרטן
In Cancer, Kopel Gurwin presents a vivid interpretation of the zodiac sign through the image of a stylized crab suspended against a deep black ground. The creature is rendered with a striking sense of rhythm and movement: its claws open outward, its legs radiate in multiple directions, and its segmented body unfolds in warm, luminous tones. Although compact in scale, the figure possesses an expressive vitality that gives the composition a strong visual presence.
The palette is central to the work’s effect. Gurwin builds the crab from shades of yellow, ochre, orange, coral, rose, and crimson, creating a gradual movement from light to saturated color. These warm hues stand out sharply against the dark background, while the ornamental frame surrounding the figure introduces a more subdued register of browns, tans, and muted greens. Around this inner border runs a ring of circular forms in reds and pinks, adding a decorative pulse that echoes the energy of the central motif.
As in other works from Gurwin’s zodiac series, the Hebrew inscription is fully integrated into the composition. Here, Mazal Sartan appears in a pink-toned Hebrew letter set at the lower right, balancing the image while affirming the identity of the sign. The lettering is treated not as an external label but as an active formal element, participating in the interplay between figure, ornament, and color.
The composition brings together emblematic imagery and ornamental design in a way that is characteristic of Gurwin’s work. Flattened forms, bold contour, and carefully orchestrated color relationships give Cancer both immediacy and decorative richness. The result is an image that transforms the zodiac sign into a self-contained visual emblem—playful, radiant, and distinctly articulated within the artist’s unique pictorial language.
