In Isaiah Prophecy, Kopel Gurwin gives visual form to one of the Bible’s most enduring visions of peace and reconciliation. At the center of the composition stands a child, calm and assured, surrounded by creatures traditionally associated with opposing natures: a lamb, a dove, and a reclining lion. Rather than dramatizing conflict, the scene imagines a world transformed — one in which innocence, gentleness, and strength coexist in harmony.

The composition is framed by an abundant green border of interlacing leaves and olive-branch motifs, which lends the work a sense of vitality and renewal. Within this verdant setting, Gurwin balances cool and warm tones with striking clarity: the deep blue of the child’s garment, the pale grey of the lamb, the white dove with its soft accents, and the brilliant pinks, oranges, and magentas of the lion. The chromatic contrasts animate the scene while preserving an atmosphere of serenity and order.

At the base of the work, the biblical passage is inscribed in Gurwin’s distinctive Hebrew letterforms. Far more than a caption, the text becomes an integral visual element within the composition, grounding the imagery in scripture while reinforcing the rhythm and structure of the design. The lettering and the ornamental frame work together to unify the scene, allowing word and image to speak with equal presence.

The verse from Isaiah 11:6 has long been understood as a prophecy of messianic peace — a vision of an ideal future in which violence gives way to concord. Gurwin interprets this prophetic image not through grandeur or spectacle, but through clarity, tenderness, and symbolic restraint. The result is a work that is at once decorative and contemplative, inviting the viewer to reflect on peace not as abstraction, but as a vividly imagined human and spiritual possibility.

And the wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and a little child shall lead them.
