Fruitage
פרי הארץ
In Fruitage, Kopel Gurwin translates a prophetic image of flourishing into an abstract composition of layered forms, flowering stems, and richly varied color. Inspired by a passage from the Book of Isaiah, the work evokes the vitality of growth without depicting a conventional landscape. Instead, botanical motifs emerge from an intricate arrangement of intersecting shapes, creating a visual world in which natural abundance and geometric invention coexist.
The composition unfolds across a warm brown ground, animated by expansive fields of turquoise, emerald green, deep blue, violet, and ochre. Clusters of circular blossoms in pale cream, lavender, pink, and muted yellow rise on slender stems, their delicate forms contrasting with the larger angular and curved shapes around them. Bands of saturated color and overlapping contours establish a lively rhythm, encouraging the eye to move between the concentrated floral arrangements and the broader structure of the image.
Gurwin’s hand-cut felt technique is particularly evident in the juxtaposition of sharply defined geometric sections and more fluid botanical elements. Visible stitching articulates the boundaries of individual shapes, while repeated circular details introduce texture and visual continuity. Unlike works in which Hebrew lettering forms a prominent ornamental framework, here the biblical connection is expressed through a small handwritten inscription near the upper right. The artist’s Hebrew signature and the date 1986 also appear near the lower left.
The passage from Isaiah 27:6 describes Israel taking root, blossoming, and filling the world with fruit. Gurwin gives this vision an abstract visual expression, replacing literal representation with an interplay of flowering forms and expansive color. The result is a meditation on renewal and abundance, in which the promise of growth finds expression through the material richness and rhythmic invention of felt appliqué.
Israel shall blossom and bud; and the face of the world shall be filled with fruitage.
