In Aquarius, Kopel Gurwin offers a vivid and imaginative interpretation of the zodiac sign of the Water-Bearer. At the center of the composition sits a stylized figure holding a luminous blue vessel, an image that immediately evokes the emblem of Aquarius while lending it a distinctly personal and poetic character. The figure’s compact pose and simplified anatomy reflect Gurwin’s singular visual language, in which symbol, ornament, and narrative are brought into elegant balance.

The palette is especially striking. Brilliant blues, violets, pinks, and greens emerge against a dark ground, creating a composition that feels at once intimate and radiant. The cool tones of the vessel and surrounding inscription are set in dynamic dialogue with the warmer pinks and purples of the figure, while the green ornamental frame introduces a vegetal rhythm that both encloses and animates the central image.

Encircling the figure is a richly decorative border composed of foliate and abstract forms, punctuated by rings of circular motifs in varying shades of blue. This ornamental structure gives the work a sense of order and continuity, echoing both celestial cycles and the decorative traditions that inform much of Gurwin’s art. At the right, the Hebrew inscription identifying the sign as Mazal Dli is integrated directly into the composition, functioning not merely as text but as a formal visual element.

Rather than presenting Aquarius through literal astrology alone, Gurwin transforms the sign into an emblem of creative vitality, introspection, and movement. The work stands as a compelling example of his ability to merge symbolic content with ornamental invention, producing an image that is both playful and deeply refined.
