A Land Inhabited
ארץ נושבת
In A Land Inhabited, Kopel Gurwin transforms a biblical reference to the Israelites’ journey through the wilderness into an abstract landscape of intersecting forms and layered color. Rather than depicting a recognizable geographical setting, the composition suggests an imagined terrain, where broad expanses of green and turquoise move between darker geometric structures. The work evokes a sense of passage and settlement while allowing the relationships between its shapes to remain open to interpretation.
The composition is organized through sweeping horizontal bands that traverse the picture, interrupted by angular forms and irregular curves. Deep greens, teal, and muted blue dominate the central field, while burgundy, violet, ochre, and bright red provide contrasting accents. Smaller arrangements of circles, parallel lines, and patterned shapes punctuate the larger areas of color. Near the lower edge, a pale arch outlined with green circular motifs introduces a distinct architectural element within the otherwise fluid composition.
The work’s material construction is particularly evident in the overlapping sections of hand-cut felt, whose contours are defined by visible stitching. Broad surfaces alternate with finely detailed passages, creating contrasts of scale and texture. A short handwritten Hebrew inscription appears against the exposed fabric ground near the upper left, while Gurwin’s Hebrew signature and the date 1980 are visible at the lower right. Unlike his works with prominent ornamental lettering, the biblical text here occupies a relatively discreet position.
The passage from Exodus 16:35 recounts the Israelites’ sustenance in the wilderness until their arrival in an inhabited land. Gurwin approaches this theme through abstraction, allowing the idea of land to emerge from an interplay of color, structure, and movement. The result is a composition that connects the biblical notion of arrival with the visual possibilities of an imagined landscape, without reducing either to literal illustration.
Until they came to a land inhabited.
