A Boat
סירה
In A Boat, Kopel Gurwin approaches the familiar form of a vessel through a composition of interlocking geometric shapes, sweeping curves, and contrasting textures. Rather than depicting a boat within a recognizable seascape, he reduces the subject to a series of structural elements whose relationships suggest a hull, sails, and the intersecting forms of a maritime construction. The result moves between representation and abstraction, allowing the viewer to discover the image through its arrangement of color and form.
Broad fields of burgundy, rust red, ochre, and deep brown establish the composition’s earthy foundation, while vivid blues, greens, and touches of violet provide contrasting accents. A large curved blue form rises near the center, intersected by narrow vertical elements, while angular shapes in orange and yellow extend across the middle of the work. Horizontal bands anchor the lower portion, creating a sense of stability beneath the more varied forms above.
The material construction is particularly prominent in this work. Precisely cut sections of felt overlap and intersect, their boundaries emphasized by visible stitching. At the upper right, a pale rectangular area introduces a markedly different surface texture, contrasting with the smooth expanses of colored felt. The exposed beige ground remains an active part of the composition, establishing visual space between the assembled shapes.
Through this interplay of geometry, texture, and carefully balanced color, Gurwin transforms the boat into a study of structure and visual rhythm. The work retains enough recognizable elements to suggest its subject while allowing the formal qualities of the materials to take precedence. In doing so, A Boat demonstrates the expressive possibilities of hand-cut felt beyond narrative or symbolic representation.
